Women Appear
This collection is not a series, but an ongoing group of related works that explore the female figure through the female gaze, and what it means to see oneself as a woman in art. In the story of Genesis, Eve did not feel ashamed of her naked body until she became aware of male spectators ("Nakedness was created in the mind of the beholder." -John Berger, Ways of Seeing, 1972). While the fruit armed her with knowledge and free will, it burdened her with the male gaze, and the unceasing knowledge that she is always being looked at by men. This collection aims for women to see themselves through a female gaze.
