About the Artist
Anna Wonnell is an abstract painter and mixed media artist from Illinois, currently in Chicago. In 2017 she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Southern Illinois University, and was awarded the Celine A. Chu Award for Excellence in Painting in 2016. Along with her artistic accomplishments, she also holds a BS in Special Education and works full time as a teacher.
Wonnell primarily works in oil, acrylic, and charcoal, but also enjoys ceramics, watercolor and sketching. Collage, whether it appears in a finished painting or not, leaves footsteps throughout Wonnell's artistic process. Countless paintings have been destroyed or repurposed over the course of their journeys. Anna Wonnell draws inspiration from artists like Yayoi Kusama, Paul Klee, Aaron Douglas, Romare Bearden, and Pablo Picasso.
Wonnell is constantly pushing herself outside the realm of the visual arts. She spends her free time playing the ukulele, zine journaling, writing, and reading. Her latest adventure involves drafting a novel.
In 2021, Anna transformed 9 original artworks into coloring pages to create a coloring book. The goal of the Weird Little Coloring Book is to provide a space where art is fun and accessible for all ages.
Between 2018 and 2022, Anna enjoyed drawing the chalkboard promoting local musicians and events for Hangar 9 in Carbondale, IL. Shoutout to Mark "The Markster" Wright for sharing his chalkboard skills, crossword puzzles, and a lifetime of stories and jokes. May he rock in peace.
